About the Artist & Art Form

This traditional Santero art form found in Northern New Mexico  was inspired after the colonization of the Southwest by the Spanish


 Carlos uses homemade gesso on board, processes mineral and organic pigments from the soils and plants of New Mexico - and finishes pieces with piñon sap.

Carlos' work includes:

 Retablos:  painted boards with carved rosettes 

Bultos:  Three dimensional painted statues of saints

About the Artist

Carlos was born in Santa Fe, NM and came into the art form after an injury.  He believes that it was Divine intervention that let him to the religious art form. He has participated in Traditional Spanish Art Market in Santa Fe for 20 years.
